Sebaceous cyst: probably infected and you have gone too long without having it evaluated and treated. You may need a surgical excisional or drainage. Call for an exam and treatment.

i have a sebaceous cyst on my head near hairline at forehead. i just applied unintentional pressure to it and i felt it pop. should i be concerned? i'm worried about infection under skin, infection in brain etc. what should i do? is this an emergency

Normal: lymph node reaction to infection. I assume you were treated.- if it  come back, see PCP immediately.

why do some skin infections stay on the surface layer, while others head deeper into the skin?

Depends...: ...On the how aggressive the strain of bacteria is, whether it is treated with the proper antibiotic before it has a chance to head deeper, where the infection is located (it's easier for bacteria to go deeper in certain areas), and how good the patient's immune system is working. Other factors include the presence of cuts or scrapes on the skin surface and the level of hygiene.

Yes: Herpes itself is usually a skin infection. There are many bacteria that can cause skin infection as there are viruses. Fungal infections are also skin infection. It is not always clear to a doc the specific type of organism causing infection. Herpes will often look different when infecting different body parts: fingers, mouth, genitals (different male vs female).

Pus: Clogged hair follicles with acne like pus pimples would be sign of skin infection. Stop and discard makeup and see doctor fortress, ENT with topical or oral antibiotics.

Depends...: ...On what kind. If you have a vaginal yeast infection, that can be gotten from (or transmitted to) a sexual partner. "jock itch" is a different organism, usually occurs outside of the vagina itself, and to the best of my knowledge, there is no credible evidence that you can catch it from another person.
