Doctor can examine: Darkening of skin in the genitals area, extending to the inner thighs, runs in some families. If many of the adults in the family have similar coloring, then it is likely normal for that family. One can see her primary care doctor for an opinion. The doctor may refer to an endocrinologist to see if there is a hormonal imbalance. Once in a while, hormone problems can cause skin darkening in places.

Skin discoloration: Skin discoloration.  Many causes. Some common and many rare. Sun (uva) causes dna damage which stimulates pigment formation. Hormones(estrogen ) can stimulate pigmentation. Fungus. (tinea versicolor)  metabolizes oleic acid to form Azelaic Acid which is toxic to melanocytes. Also, whenever the skin gets irritated or inflammed it will heal lighter than normal or darker than normal.

One type is called melanocytes which carry our skin pigment melanin.  A healing occurs, these cells get deposited int he area and give it the brownish coloration you see.  Over time, there will be some fading as the injury matures.

A doctor can check to be sure the rash is fungal, and give details on treatment.

Depends on type : Erythema multiforme usually goes away within 6 weeks.  It can persist into the chronic form.  It can come and go. Many causes have been identified, and the prognosis is dependent on treating the trigger (infection, immunization, medication). If the cause was a herpes infection, then treating the herpes can get rid of the em and its flare ups.
