(tinea versicolor) metabolizes oleic acid to form Azelaic Acid which is toxic to melanocytes. Also, whenever the skin gets irritated or inflammed it will heal lighter than normal or darker than normal.

Many possibilities: There are many things that may cause discoloration of the skin. Several types of inflammatory conditions of the skin, poor arterial or venous circulation, allergic reactions, sun exposure, friction, bacterial, viral or fungal infections, insect bites, and cancer can all cause discoloration of the skin. Have it evaluated by a professional and get the appropriate treatment.
