It varies: Autism is an incredibly complex problem that manifests itself in many ways.  If you are looking for a simple answer like you would get for a simpler disease (eg: chicken pox causes fever and rash), then you will be frustrated.   There are books on this subject....Big ones.   If you are concerned that your child is autistic, you need to see your pediatrician or a  pediatric neurologist.

Observation : Because there are no blood tests to test for autism, we rely on behavioral observations.  For parents here are a few questions:  does your child make eye contact?  Will they imitate you?  Do they respond to their names?  Do they play with a wide variety of toys?  Does your child point to show you things?  If you answer no to 2 or 3 of these, see your pediatrician and share your concerns.  Best!

Autism Intervention: You can learn how to improve the non verbal communication with your child. Please look in the information posted online on this subject, and practice observing the child's responses to your interactions. For example, how is communicating anger, need for affection, hunger, tiredness, etc. And how is expressing relief of tension, pain, or other feelings. Write notes to bring to the evaluation !

Be proactive : There are many interventions that can be helpful. Some are provided by therapists and some can be undertaken by the parents. While waiting to have services such as speech, ot, pt and behavioral to be put in place look for a provider in your area who understands that additonal interventions may be helpful and can guide you. Check national autism websites for local providers. Be persistent.

Nl kids do this to: Pica is a common term for eating odd things & many 2yo will explore the world using taste as one of their inputs. Share your concerns with your daughters doc but don't get stuck on the autism thing. Lots of normal kids will go through this phase.

Hx & Exam: The definition of CP is a disorder of movement & posture due to injury to the developing nervous system that ocrurred anytime from pregnancy to 3 yrs of age. If you have seen a neuro & s/he is not concerned about the kids movements, you have been checked. However, there are mild forms of CP that may not become evident untill more refined movements are expected as an older child.
