my father is diagnosed with prostate cancer and now the radiation oncologist prescribed him to take the cosidex pill and then lupron injection. his in intermediate stage with gleason score 7, is it really the best way to treat his cancer?

: If your dad does not want surgery and prefer radiation therapy, he will be referred to a radiation oncologist who will discuss the radiation modalities so your dad can decide. Rad oncologist does not prescribe pills unless your dad wants radiation tx but oncologist wants to shrink the prostate first with hormon tx. Prostate cancer Gleason score 7 should be treated and your dad decides the Rx type.

Not necessarily: Leuprolide is a common form of lhrh agonist which is used in the treatment of prostate cancer. It reduces the hormone testosterone to low levels, killing much but not all of a patient's cancer. It is used in intermediate and high risk cases along with radiation for curative treatment. It is also used in men with more advanced disease. It depends on the situation but it is an effective tool.

Side effect: The most common side effect of Lupron (leuprolide) is hot flashes. Unfortunately there is not much to do about it. The good news is that Lupron (leuprolide) is stopping your prostate cancer from being active. Lupron (leuprolide) in addition to radiation  has been shown to work better than radiation alone for some patients with prostate cancer.

Slightly Possible: The vast majority of Lupron (leuprolide) users have no reported decrease in seminal fluid.  Those that do report a decrease were mostly &gt;60 yrs old.

Need more info: Is  the lymph node in the chest related to the prostate cancer? How is the psa? Anything else positive on the bone scan/ct scan ? Options one can get once the cancer progresses on lupron- including- Provenge vaccines; other androgen blocker, chemotherapy, zytiga, (abiraterone acetate) . Radiation  will prob not needed for lymph gland in the chest and better not to do it at the same time as chemo. Discuss with  your md.

Yes: There is not an interaction between these drugs. One must be careful with the injection of leuprolide when one is on blood thinners to make certain no bleeding occurs.  Eligard is a form of leuprolide given sq rather than im which may lessen bleeding risks at administration.

Yes: Brachytherapy is another form of radiation therapy to treat prostate cancer. The only difference is the manner in which the radiation is delivered. Brachytherapy may cause more urinary symptoms since a higher dose of radiation is delivered in a shorter amount of time. However, the side effects are about the same which include urinary frequency, urinating at night, and some mild urinary discomfort.
