Bacterial vaginosis: Bacterial vaginosis is correctly treated by both metronidazole and/or doxycycline although the latter is often less effective due to bacterial resistance.  The unilateral pain is of more concern for a fallopian tube infection and an ultrasound first and secondly a laparoscopy can help delineate. or rule out that concern. Hopefully, your MD also did STD testing as some STD's are often masked by BV.

2-3 days: When a woman has a bacterial vaginosis infection and starts an antibiotic it usually takes 2-3 days for her to start feeling better.  But take the whole treatment!  otherwise there is more chance of the infection coming back.

Once BV is treated: Properly there should be no more odor , if you still have odor then you need reculture and re txment with a different med from the 1st time.

i was diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis about 2 years ago. i've taken doxycycline first then metronidazole. doxycycline reduced discharge but it came back after sometime. metronidazole-no effects. i'd like to know if there's alternative treatment?

: In view of no effect by metro. and poor by doxy- I would suggest an exam by a Gyn to see for any local problem and to also re-culture the area In the meantime keeping the area clean, using a condom and trying a OTC boric acid product

Multiple: Std's or sexually transmitted diseases, are diseases transmitted through sexual contact.  Examples are gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, hiv, hepatitis c, genital warts, and genital herpes.  Bacterial vaginosis is a condition  caused by an overabundance of anaerobic bacteria in the vagina.  Symptoms can include a watery, foul or fishy smelling discharge and/or vaginal irritation.

Chlamydia vs. BV: I would have to say this would be highly unlikely, providing that the doctor sent urine and/or vaginal swabs for lab analysis.  If no testing was done, it's possible that the doctor could misdiagnose.

Vaginal pH change: The vagina is kept at a pH(acidity/alkalinity) scale of 4.5 to 5.5.(mildly acidic) by Doderleins bacteria that are "native"(beneficial) to the vagina and maintain a rather constant pH.  Several events can abnormally change the pH or kill the "good" bacteria, such as frequent douching, perfumed soap use, non-hygienic sexual partners, and unsanitary dildos. BV thrives on those situations.
