Finasteride : Finasteride is an alternative to avodart (dutasteride).  Unfortunately, it has a very similar side effect protocol to Avodart (dutasteride) as it has the same mechanism of action.

Alpha blockers like tamsulosin, sildosin or alfuzosin are very good at improving a patient's force of stream.  However, they too can cause a decrease in your ejaculate.  They should not however interfere with your sex drive.  They would really provide your best chance for symptomatic relief.

I would also speak to your urologist about the possiblity of surgical intervention.  However this too will likely wipe out your ejaculate.

As for alternative products, there have been two randomized control trials looking at saw palmetto published in the nejm that have shown that it does not work.  As for other products, I do not know of any hard data showing that they work.

No it is not related: Avodart (dutasteride) is a 5 Alpha  reductase inhibitor  that will reduce the size of the prostate and lower the psa level by 50% .It may lower the volume of the ejaculate and caouse ed in some men but shold not change the  length of the penis.

Avodart (dutasteride): While erectile dysfunction is listed as a common side effect of Avodart, (dutasteride) in my experience it is more likely that the medication is exacerbating another cause of erectile dysfunction rather than being the sole cause.  The drug has a very long half-life and may stay in your system for many weeks after stopping it. I would recommend an evaluation for ED by a urologist.

Shrinks the prostate: Avodart (dutasteride) blocks the conversion of testosterone to its more potent form (dihydrotestosterone).  The medication leads to a reduction in prostate size and prevents further growth while it is being taken.  One should remember to double the psa blood test level once a patient has been taking Avodart (dutasteride) for at least 6 months.

Unlikely: Avodart (dutasteride) for treatment of enlarged symptomatic prostate as a brand name is allowed by FDA a certain period of EXCLUSIVITY,usually 17 yrs.
After that expires other companies can market it as a generic drug

If physician agrees: stopping Avodart (dutasteride) will not lead to any serious problems although the therapeutic benefit on your prostate will be lost. The trial off the medicine to see if it helps with sexual dysfunction is not unreasonable. I suspect, however, that you need to have a testosterone level checked before assuming Avodart (dutasteride) is the sole cause of your problem
