Finasteride : Finasteride is an alternative to avodart (dutasteride). Unfortunately, it has a very similar side effect protocol to Avodart (dutasteride) as it has the same mechanism of action. Alpha blockers like tamsulosin, sildosin or alfuzosin are very good at improving a patient's force of stream. However, they too can cause a decrease in your ejaculate. They should not however interfere with your sex drive. They would really provide your best chance for symptomatic relief. I would also speak to your urologist about the possiblity of surgical intervention. However this too will likely wipe out your ejaculate. As for alternative products, there have been two randomized control trials looking at saw palmetto published in the nejm that have shown that it does not work. As for other products, I do not know of any hard data showing that they work.

I : I am not beholden to any pharmaceutical company but dietary supplement manufacturers are not held to same standards as companies that make medications, both prescribed & over-the-counter. Even the folks who make your Aspirin & Acetaminophen (brand name is tylenol) have to be able to prove both safety & benefit. Dietary supplement manufacturers don't have to prove either as long as they place the fda disclaimer on the product. So i'd be very careful about taking any supplements with wild & outlandish claims. If you need something for an enlarged prostate and the issues it causes, the direct competitor to Avodart (dutasteride) is Proscar (generic is finasteride). You might get better relief w/one versus the other w/o side effects (kinda like choosing between chevy, dodge & ford). Both these meds try to shrink the prostate but cause the side effects you describe by shifting the waste product of testosterone towards estradiol, the female hormone. You can try to relax the prostate by taking an Alpha blocker, either with or without blood pressure lowering properties. Or you can try cialis(!) which is typically sold to help men w/erectile dysfunction. But honey, my doctor said i need this for my prostate! it's true! by the way, try to stay away from decongestants and first generation allergy medications as these will only aggravate your situation. Along those same lines, some prescription medications can also make matters worse so review your list w/your family physician. Good luck!
