Make her feel safe.: Kids are normally shy when they are young. You do not mention your child´s age, but being shy is part of a personality trait and not a disease.  Most people, adults and children alike feel shy when they are around strangers or large gatherings, not to mention when they have to give a presentation at school. Let her know it is ok to be shy and avoid pushing her. She will blossom when it is right.

The way to build confidence is by providing gentle support while helping your child to succeed in a variety of situations and settings. Get them involved in: Activities that will build self confidence. Acting classes, dance, music all include some recitals/performances. Pick something that the child enjoys and hopefully can excel in. This will help them try many different kinds of activities and make friends in the process.

Exposure: Medicine is not the answer. The best approach is exposure to other children thru play dates, programs, school etc. Therapy is necessary only for severely disabled older kids. !st with 1 or 2 kids and then increasing the exposure.

Not necessarily: But it is important to seek help.A behavioral therapist could be very helpful in helping your child overcome these issues.Uncorrected  yes, they could lead to mental illness.

Try to reach beyond: Your comfort zone. Set some simple goals, i.e., to smile and say something at a social gathering to one new person. Practice before hand some possible things to say.
