Yes, quite commonly: The older you get, you have more chances of spine issues in back and neck from degenerative changes to cause neuropathy of varying severity. Most of the times, symptoms do come and go based on degree of bony occlusion and pressure on nerves. Learning to live with these "growing pains" may help you avoid unnecessary surgeries.

Need a thorough exam: There are many causes of peripheral neuropathies. You need to see your primary care physician for a detailed exam, which will include lab studies to delineate the cause

Shoulder pain: If your xray/mri was normal, it's encouraging. I would suggest physical therapy as the next step but would leave the final decision up to your treating doc.

Sleeping on your arm: Puts a great deal of pressure on your rotator cuff and drives the cuff up into your shoulder blade and collarbone. It is akin to someone clamping you thigh for eight hours it is going to hurt. Furthermore your ac joint also can become inflamed. Finally the nerves in you arm get stretched and irritated.  Try sleeping in a recliner, wear a shoulder immobilizer, or sleep with your back supported.

Pain: It occurs when there is damage to the brachial plexus, an area where a nerve bundle from the spinal cord splits into the individual arm nerves.  Damage to the brachial plexus is usually related to direct injury to the nerve, stretching injuries (including birth trauma), pressure from tumors in the area, or damage that results from radiation therapy.

Consider neck issue: While the ulnar nerve can cause pain radiating up the arm, it is more typically associated with pain from the elbow to the hand.  One possibility is that you might have a pinched nerve in the neck as well- this can look very similar to an ulnar nerve issue, but is treated differently.

: An MRI of the shoulder may get detailed views of soft structures in the shoulder, an ultrasound may be suboptimal in detecting abnormalities to the nerve level, may still pick fluid collections for example. Best would be to start with a clinical exam with an orthopedic surgeon that specializes in shoulder pathology.

i've been hospitalized with pericarditis this weekend. i have a strong (nerve)pain in my right shoulder even with ascal. is this normal/associated?

Maybe.: If you have the pain now and it was not present when you were in the hospital, call your doc or get seen today.  If it was there before, it certainly could be related.  If the pain was controlled before but now isn't, that is also worrying and warrants another call to the doc or a re-check quickly.

Maybe: There are effective neuropathic medications as well as nerve block injection. Have you had electrodiagnostic testing and imaging yet? Please speak with your neurologist.
