Get examined!: At age 55 your most common cause for this pain would still be 'impingement' ( or bursitis). Labral tears causing this pain are less likely unless associated with the biceps 'anchor'( SLAP) lesions -- but less likely in isolation in your age group.Osteoarthritis can cause pain in this distribution . AC joint arthritis can also cause pain when rotating arm towards chest ( adduction). See an ORS! GL!

Hard to say: I'm sorry, but there is just not enough info to answer this one. Is it a full tear or partial or just tendinitis? Did it develop over time or from one big injury? Have you had surgery? All of these things, as well as patient specific factors, affect healing. The bigger the injury, the longer the healing. A strain can heal quickly (weeks) but a repaired cuff can take 6 months.

Possibly not related: It may not be the rotator cuff thats hurting. Pitchers, and throwing athletes can develop pain in the non throwing shoulder for a variety of reasons, and causes.  Try some anti-inflmaatory meds and do a home exercise program (http://nycsportsmed.Com/tennis-shoulder-tuned.Html), and if not better, see a sports medicine orthopedist.

Try ice/ antiinflamm: Intially, would suggest relative rest (no heavy work or lifting, stop weight lifting, sports using the shoulder), ice for 15-20 minutes nightly the entire shoulder area with flat flexible soft ice pack.  Alternate with heat application, or topical like aspercreme, icy-hot.... If tolerated, may try two advil (ibuprofen) or one to two alleve daily with food.  If problem persists more than 10 days, see doc.

Cold then hot: The idea is to reduce pain fiber messages &amp; swelling the first 48 hrs with cool then to improve circulation to promote circulation after 48 hrs. Heat can increase pain if there is enough injury so it must be used with caution.

Roator cuff: Some of the symptoms are night pain, pain with overhead lifting, weakness in arm with lifting, popping sensation with motion.

Inflammation: Impingement means pinching of the rotator cuff  muscles in  the shoulder which in turn cause inflammation.Treatment can be conservative with physical therapy, anti -inflammatory, steroid injection or even surgery in small percentage of pt.Up to 90 % can  be recover within 6 months or so.
