Pain/disability: When to have a knee replacement has to be an individualized decision. The patient's age, health, ability to undergo a lengthy surgery, degree of pain along with the amount of disability and loss of function are all major factors that have to be considered. The severity of arthritis on a x-ray should not be the primary factor, as many with severe x-ray changes have little pain and good function.

Not 21 again: The goal of a total knee replacement is to relieve pain and improve function. It is not the knee you had when you were 21, however.  The amount of use and range of motion you can expect after surgery is often determined by how aggressively you do your post-operative rehabilitation.  Talk to your orthopaedic surgeon. See a physical therapist before your surgery for "prehab" therapy.

It : It may be osteoarthritis, but without further information, it is difficult to be 100% certain.  Typically, one would need to know some of the following:  how long has it be bothering you, any history of injury, has it ever swelled up or turned red, and do you have similar problems in any of your other joints.  The starting point should be to see your primary care doctor and let them discuss diagnosis and treatment options.

Right away: Cpm can be used immediately after surgery especially if a epidural catheter is in place.

It’s complicated : Many possibilities- loosening of prosthesis, infection, poor fit of prosthesis - (rejection VERY uncommon).

Long term steroids are not effective and can cause serious problems. You need a second opinion

1 hours: Ideally you should be placed on it in the recovery room whole still sedated.  Once you are able to move the knee on your own, the benefit of continuous passive motion is less apparent.

i am allergic to ibuprofen. had knee replacement. what can i use to reduce swelling in my knee?

Accepted Answer

Ask your surgeon: for alternatives for pain control, but if truly ALLERGIC to Ibuprofen must avoid all NSAID's.  Having said that, there are a few herbal things that do reduce inflammation/swelling but by different mechanisms.  High quality Omega 3 (fish) oil is good.  So is Curcumin, especially in combination with Resveratrol.   Cold pack can help, and you should elevate the knee above hip level whenever possible.

use advil (ibuprofen) for relief. how long is typical time table for pain/recovery of total knee replacement of both knees?

6-12 weeks: At age 44, you probably do not want  knee replacements if you are talking about yourself. Recovery time is in the area of 6-12 weeks.
