Yes you can: You can take both together without problems. You can try Antivert (meclizine) by itself to see if it also takes care of the hives. Antivert (meclizine) can also treat hives but zyrtec does not work for vertigo.

Dizziness: If your dizziness did not respond to antivert, (meclizine) see your doctor or consult a neurologist or ear, nose and throat specialist. See neurologist: You detail symptoms but no diagnosis. Antivert (meclizine) is helpful but not the only medicine o treat this problem. First, we need a correct diagnosis to determine if this is a blood pressure, inner ear, brain stem, or other cause. Then, can the best treatment can follow.

took 2 meclizine (antivert) pills today for dizziness. it caused severe anxiety. can i take an ativan (lorazepam) to help me relax or will it interact?

Caution: Meclizine is an older antihistamine like Benadryl (diphenhydramine) so typically causes drowsiness, not anxiety, but every patient is different.  Long-acting benzos like Ativan are also used to help control dizziness, so the two drugs will work well together to suppress vertigo, but will also double the sedation.  Taking one Ativan pill now should be ok, but better to start with just one pill of each initially.

how does "antivert" work in positional vertigo?

It doesn't work well: Positional vertigo occurs when the position of the head changes and loose calcium deposits float free sending a mixed signal to the brain about the location and motion of the head. This leads to a very intense and short lived sensation of motion (vertigo). Antivert (meclizine) won't stop this but it might make the sensation less intense.

Not effective: You should know that Antivert (meclizine) or generically called Meclizine is an antihistamine and as such will only effect your brain and cause sedation.  It has no effect on the inner ear.  Benign positional vertigo is the result of loose calcium carbonate crystals in the inner ear and will respond to head exercises or physical therapy by a trained therapist in inner ear vertigo.

Vertigo: Learn more about the two broad types of vertigo at: http://www.Nlm.Nih.Gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001432.Htm  if your does not respond to Antivert (meclizine) it might be central rather than peripheral.  My strong suggestion is to advise your doctor that Antivert (meclizine) did not work and see what he suggests, or consult a neurologist or an ear nose and throat specialist. Because there are potentially serious causes.

im 31 and was just diagnosed with acute vertigo, taking antivert 3-4 times a day helps me balence, but the screeching and partial hearing loss! help!

Meniere's disease?: Are you having headaches as well?  With vertigo, hearing loss and screeching (ringing in the ears perhaps??) you've described 3/4 symptoms of Ménière's disease, the only last symptom being headaches on the side of the hearing loss and ringing in the ear.  You'd need an MRI to know that the inner ears and brain in general look OK.  Treatment for this is challenging.
