See orthopedist : Was the doc an orthopedist?  These small, nondisplaced finger fractures will heal but are often splinted for pain relief. See an orthopedist or call your doc if he is an orthopedist.

Soft tissue injury: Often times when there has been a soft tissue injury to a finger, a peripheral nerve to that area can be injured along with muscle and skin.  Symptoms after an injury such as swelling and turning purple (bruising) often times indicates that there has been enough soft tissue injury that a nerve may be temporarily injured as well.  These conditions usually last only a brief time.

Fingernail: First , as doctors , we need to see the injury .  Some injuries require a lot of help while others do not.  There is just no substitute for the  physical evaluation .   A dermatologist or podiatrist can help here .

Depends: On how bad a  fracture or break in the digit and on any damaged soft tissue. There are instances where the affected digit will always remain slightly swollen or larger in appearance than the same digit on the opposite limb.

had tendon repair surgery 11 days ago for zone 2 pinky finger injury. in splint & occupational therapy for next 6 weeks & stitches come out tomorrow. finger still quite stiff feeling. normal? how long before stiffness subsides & it loosens up?

: You're experiencing normal postop stiffness. It can go on for weeks. Hopefully you'll eventually regain full range of motion. Your hand surgeon who knows the full extent of your injury and type of repair will advise you best.

Buddy Tape: It depends on where the finger is broken.  If there is a fracture of the small finger bones (phalanges) treatment is often as simple as taping the finger to the ring finger.  If there is any rotational deformity or articular involvement this must be corrected and occasionally warrants surgical intervention.

can i take this splint off mallet finger?

Yes, carefully: Splinting for mallet fingers works by keeping the torn end of the extensor tendon closely approximated to the bone. By removing the splint, you risk pulling the tendon away from the bone. This may delay or even prevent healing. The splint should be worn 24hrs/day, 7days/wk for 6 weeks for best results.  If you have to remove the splint, keep the tip of the finger hyperextended. Put it back on asap.
