Causes for what seems to be a light period can include: implantation bleeding in early pregnancy, thyroid problems, eating disorders, excessive exercise, initial periods for a girl, use of an intrauterine device, oral contraceptives & perimenopause.

Brief period ?: If "never having sex" means not having intercourse or exposure to semen at all, then pregnancy is not an issue,  but if you have been with a male who may have ejaculated near but not inside the vagina, pregnancy is possible.  Wait another week, and get a serum HCG test if pregnancy is possible.  If negative, your cycle will probably resume normally next month.

No other symptoms?: If there are no ill symptoms, it is fine for a woman's period to be off schedule, longer, or shorter, once in a while. Life is not exact. If there are recurring symptoms or worrisome symptoms (such as increased pain or signs of infection), a woman can see her primary care doctor or an ob-gyn doctor for an evaluation.

Light periods: There is nothing wrong with light periods. Many people would happily trade with you. If you think you might be pregnant check then check a home pregnancy test. They are cheap, reliable and available  at any pharmacy. If you do not want to be pregnant at 17 then please consider birth control. This will also give you more control over your menstrual cycles

The : The length of the period can change with fluctuations of hormones, which can be caused by various stressors on the body, and even by weight gain or loss.  If it was very light or just spotting and you are at all concerned that you could be pregnant, then taking a pregnancy test would be reasonable.  Some women after 45 start having shorter periods as well; i don't know your age.

The big question is.: Are you sexually active active?  If you are sexually active and not using protection any change in the pattern of your period could mean you might be pregnant.  If no protection  you could also get other things besides pregnant! (STD's).  If you have not had intercourse, and you have no other complaints, Phew! it is probably no big deal.  Periods can change from month to month. See doc tho!

Cycle variation: What you experience may just represent normal variation of the strength and length of your cycle, it's just that it hasn't happened to you before. There could be a permanent change in your cycle pattern going on, too. But if this is all there is, no reason to worry.

Repeat: Repeat the test in 4 -5 days. I would trust it if repeatedly negative.
