Nerve compression: Sharp shooting pain usually indicates nerve involvement, compression of cervical nerve root by herniated disc, ulnar nerve in ulnar canal, brachial plexus nerves, if accompanied by weakness.

Sounds like pinched: nerve, but any pain in left arm is concerning for angina.  You are quite young to develop heart disease, but you should see your doctor to make sure your heart is ok, especially if you have risk factors.

the joints in my left hand are stiff and sore, wrist is also somewhat sore, and shooting pain up to my elbow.

carpel tunnel : It sounds like a repetitive stress injury such as carpel tunnel syndrome. You must ice the area, take nsaids, and avoid the stressful use of that hand. If all else fails, see a hand doctor.

i hit my elbow hard and now when i lean on it , i get a sharp shooting pain. it seems to be getting worse. is there something i can do at home to help?

Yes: If you injured the ulnar nerve which runs thru the elbow in the cubital tunnel then you need to get an elbow pad to avoid putting pressure on the nerve.  If there is any concern for a fracture then please see your primary care doctor to get an x-ray.

why do i get a sharp shooting pain radiating from my elbow up the back of my upper arm only when i lean on that elbow?

"funny bone": The ulnar nerve, which carries sensation down that side of your arm & hand, toward the 5th finger, passes across the elbow at the point we call the "funny bone." at that spot, it is very close to the surface, and when you lean on it at certain angles, it gets pinched.  If changing the angle of your arm when you lean on it doesn't help or if it gets worse, see your doc to make sure that's all it is.

i knocked my arm below the elbow hard 3 weeks ago. i can use the arm but when i twist my arm i get a shooting pain in the arm. do i need an x-ray?

Yes: If it is still painful, it is recommended to get an xray at this point.  This could be a subtle radial head/neck fracture near the elbow.

X-Ray: Will be able to tell if you broke your hand/elbow. Consider going to er/urgent care if pain, swelling, inability to move in normal range of motion.

Trauma?: Have you had trauma to your elbow especially on the lateral aspect of the elbow. You seem by hx to have some trauma or irritation to the radial nerve from elbow down to the wrist and hand See your doctor if persist more

Tendonitis: You likely have a case of tendonitis.  Try resting or decreasing the amount of activity with that arm.  You can also use ice to decrease swelling and help with the pain.  OTC NSAIDs (if you are not allergic and do not have any GI problems - e.g., ulcer) can often be effective in relieving tendinopathy pain and can be used topically or orally.  If these don't work, see your doctor for help.
