if i scratch shingles and then touch my mouth, could it cause severe tongue swelling?

Accepted Answer

Not likely: shingles is zoster from having had the chicken pox. It is not transferred like that. If you put some kind of topical medicine on the sores you may have transferred the medicine and have had a reaction to that med.

Shingles: Shingle can occur anywhere in the body, usually as painful blisters affecting one side of the body.  This is caused by chicken pox (herpes zoster) viral infection, which lies dormant in the nerve tissue and reactivate as shingles. It can heal by itself in 2 - 3 weeks. However, it can develop severe form and involve multiple nerves  in immunocompromised person. Antiviral drug can shorten the course

Shingles: This herpes zoster can lay along the facial dermatomes

Internet Diagnosis?: The picture is small and the red patch even smaller and honestly is not big or clear enough to tell you what we think with any degree of certainty. Median rhomboid glossitis, a growth or something else? Pure guesses!  was it always there or recently formed? You will need to see your general dentist, oral surgeon, pcp or ENT specialist for a definitive diagnosis.

Bumps are normal: There are lots of taste buds on your tongue. Small bumps in the front and large bumps in the back. The ones in the back usually are aligned in an arrow pointing forward in the center.

Anywhere: Shingles, or herpes zoster, can appear anywhere; severe, disseminated cases appear over wide areas of distribution.  Yes, you can get shingles that manifest in your mouth.

can we differentiate with pictures and explanation between fissured and pathological tongue disease? i am worry  and not sure what i have.

Yes and no: Fissured tongue really isnt a disease.  It's just a characteristic that some people have.  For an example, i've included a photo of fissured tongue.  There are differing degrees as well, some more or less pronounced.  If there is a concern that you have some sort of pathology, see a dentist for a professional opinion.
