Maybe not: Central low back pain is most often due to inflammation/arthritis of the disk/joints in the spine or inflammation/injury the soft tissues (muscles/tendons) .  Occasionally, lumbar nerve root compression can begin as midline pain but this is certainly not the most likely cause.

Physical exam first: You need to see a doctor to have a physical exam to role out muscular reasons, listen to your lung to role out lung problems. Further exam include chest x-ray, etc.

Back ache: This may be muscle or nerve related. Can be muscle spasm, but if pain is severe one has to exclude pinching of a nerve in the lower back. One should also consider renal problems like kidney stones

Probably muscular: Probably muscular, can ask for a referral to physical therapy for a few weeks. 
Also need to consder that is might come from the neck. Yawning causes you to tilt you head back, and the cervical extension might exacerbate facetogenic pain referring to the mid back. 
Recommend seeing a physician for further evaluation.

Activity?: What activity were you doing when the pop occurred?  It could be a rupture of a Baker's cyst (benign cyst that occurs behind the knee) or it could be a ligament rupture which is more serious.  Is the knee swollen or feel like it's going to give out? I would elevate, rest and ice the knee for the next 24 hours and if it's no better see your doctor or urgent care.
