See a doctor: Unclear by history, but depending on where the lump is, it may be an enlarged thyroid (if at bottom of neck). Could be any number of things, possibly concerning in light of size of mass and firmness, especially if you smoke. If your neck was fused, a pressure sensation in the throat is very common, and you could have some fibrosis / scarring (small price to pay for healthier spine).

There are a ...: Number of structures in the neck deep to the scm that can cause the muscle to displace laterally and look big and feel hard. Large lymph nodes are most common, also tumors and cysts occur here. Torticollis can affect the muscle as can benign and malignant tumors of the muscle, however these are rare. Suggest you see a physician.

Lymph node: Lymph nodes are located throughout the body ; generally noticable in exposed areas like the neck. They are usually pea sized at rest and enlarged when stimulated by bug bites, dermatitis, drainage or infection. They rarely can become damaged by infection ; grow to golf ball size ; need drainage or removal. Most enlarge and later shrink back down within a 3 wk cycle unless chronically stimulated.

Trigger points : A "knot" near the bottom of the neck (lower cervical spine) or in between the shoulder blade is commonly do to a muscle spasm. The descriptors provided indicates that this is likely a myofascial or muscular trigger point, which is a form of muscle spasm. "a pinched nerve" in the neck can commonly cause the described symptoms as well. Effective treatment can be started once diagnosis is confirmed.

Knot: I wonder if you're describing enlarged lymph nodes which can occur in those regions in response to conditions like scalp infection, viral infections,blood disorders or malignancies. Muscle knotting would be an unusual finding in those areas. I recommend that you have these masses examined by a physician to be sure.

Muscle spasm: 20&#x27;s male with knot-like sensation in upper neck likely has chronic muscle spasm.  If symptoms are unilateral then chronic head tilting is to be considered.  Other associated findings might be asymmetric shoulders with underlying scoliosis and even pelvic girdle asymmetry due to a unilateral SIJ hypermobility disorder.  Osteopathy, massage, cannabis topicals, and acupuncture are considerations.

Enlarged nodes from 1) normal response to inflammation 2) lymph node cancer 3) regional cancer moved to lymph node 4) weird infections.   Parotid masses usuallu require surgery but 80% are benign. If this has been present for more than a few weeks please see a doc experienced in head and neck disease.  Usually a Plastic Surgeon or ENT.

Monitoring Centers: Lymphatic system absorbs/carries things too big to go into the arteries/veins like bacteria eaten by white cells and digested food. Lymph nodes "taste" the lymph for anything bad  like bacteria/viruses/cancers, etc. When it detects a problem, it alerts the immune system and your body reacts.  They enlarge in response to the inflammation they create when they react.  They shrink when all is well.
