Overall rather safe: Allergic side effects: skin rash, urticaria, photosensitivity, rarely - anaphylaxis, stevens-johnson syndrome. Gastro-intestinal: diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, anorexia, stomatitis & rarely hepatitis. Kidney: interstitial nephritis, BUN & creatinine elevation & rarely kidney failure. Mood changes, cough & shortness of breath, easy bruising, weakness, insomnia, fatigue. Any changes noted ? Se.

Not really : For an acute abscess, it isn't the best antibiotic, but may be of some benefit.  Is a combination of 2 antibiotics used most commonly for utis.  Bacterial infections in the mouth generally indicate a need for treatment such as filling, extraction, periodontal treatments, or root canal therapy.  Any antibiotic use would be short term, and septra (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) isnt the best one for that.

Sulfa for Strep: Sulfonamide drugs were frequently used for Strep throat in the 1930s but fell out of favor approximately 10 years later when it was felt that bacterial resistance has developed.  However, at least one study has proven this to be false, and sulfonamide drugs may be useful for this infection in patients with allergies to more traditionally used antibiotics or with multiple infections.

If this is change in: Status of finger then it needs to be rechecked.  Swelling, redness, heat, increased tenderness, purulent drainage or red streaks are all signs that infection may have set in. Take care.
