Also referred to as DVT or deep vein thrombosis. It is almost always the result of one or more of 3 conditions (known as virchow's triad): 1stasis of blood, 2 endothelial injury or 3 hyper-coagulability. Common causes for each: 1 long trip 2 post surgery or trauma 3 birth control pills or blood disorder.

Acute and chronic.: Phlebothrombosis is a clot in a vein and thrombophlebitis is a clot in a vein which then becomes inflamed.  Phlebothrombosis tends to be chronic while thrombophlebitis tends to be acute. Thrombophlebitis can become phlebothrombosis.

Conservative treat: The good news is that, while annoying, thrombophlebitis is not typically a dangerous problem, it is not the very serious dvt. It is treated by a regimen of conservative treatment, which includes high-dose nsaid's for 10-14 days, use of medical grade compression stockings, application of moist, hot compresses to the affected area, 3-time daily elevation of the limb, and daily exercise for 30 min.

Usually blood thinne: If the clot only involves superficial veins, it can be tested with warm soaks and NSAID (motrin family). For deep vein clots blood thinners are the best treatment.  Typically a type of Heparin followed by coumadin (warfarin).  Length of treatment depends on why the clot happened and other medical conditions.

No cure just rx: Thrombophlebits is a symptom and not a disease. The underlying cause needs to be treated first. However if its severe and theres skin breakdown then an infection can occur. Antibiotics would be indicated. Otherwise depending on the cause , support stockings , anticoagulation etc may be needed.

Time varies.: There are 2 kinds of blood clots in the legs-superficial and deep.  Superficial clots are called superficial phlebitis and present usually with pain, redness and tenderness on the surface of the skin around a visual vein or varicose vein. Deep phlebitis (DVT) usually presents with swelling, pain and tenderness of the medial thigh or posterior calf. Treatment time varies with each.

Surface vein clot: Superficial thrombophlebitis is a blood clot in a superficial vein, just below the surface of the skin. It is most common in the leg in a preexisting varicose vein. While it can be quite painful, the chance of fatality is very small. This would oily happen if the clot extends into a deeper vein and breaks off, traveling to the lung. While theoretically possible, this would be very rare.
