Depends: Usually takes 6 weeks for something to heal without help. But it depends what is wrong with your shoulder. Usually you need to do something to help it heal. Big joints require movement to be healthy so you at least need some corrective exercise.

Accepted Answer

Depends: It depends on the cause/duration/severity.  If it is a recent injury, a short course of anti inflammatory medication may be helpful in reducing the pain and inflammation. Non medication options may be just as helpful, i.e. Ice, physical therapy, rest. Other options may include an injection(depending on cause). If pain persists discuss with your md for a diagnosis and an appropriate treatment plan.

Pain: Pain below the shoulder is very likely muscular. It is possible you may have a pulled muscle causing sharp pain. However, at your age there are several other possibilities such as shingles. Please see your doctor for proper evaluation. Also, note any other symptoms such as shortness of breath, sweating, burning pain etc.

: Ice applied to the area for 20 minutes at a time at least 3-5 times per day will help to reduce inflammation. Acetaminophen can also be used for pain relief. If the pain/discomfort persists for more than 2 weeks, you may need to see a Dr for imaging and exam.

None w/out diagnosis: Presentation is interesting.In my pain practice, i've seen similar.Frequently, the problem is rib dysfunction which causes pain near the shoulder (usually behind shoulder).This same problem can affect muscles, nerves, & blood flow to the head causing neck pain &/or problems like dizziness.A good history & physical including an osteopathic hands-on exam may find the cause leading to cure-w/out meds.

i have joint pains in the shoulder, elbow and wrist not sure what really to use for pain medication?

Upper extremity pain: Usually movement of the joint helps keep it functional and helps pain. If the pain is in the muscles or tendons, moist heat can help along with over the counter capsaicin or Voltaren  gel. Oral ibuprofen or Aleve is OK but irritates the stomach and affects the kidney.

Rotator cuff: Start with some easy exercises to work the muscles of the shoulder blade that the rotator cuff attaches to. This will take some of the strain off the cuff.  Use a rag and wipe a surface in the numbers of a clock face from the center up to 12:00 then back to center then 1:00 and so on. Start on a flat table top and gradually work your way up to a mirror or other vertical surface. Motrin may help.

NSAIDs: Try taking alive or local application of mineral ice for two to 3 times a day for 3 days then taper off and stop . Remember not to take medicines in empty stomach.

months. it is flat skinned and has no irritation or itching. i do not take any medications. ?
