Multiple ways: Secondary liver cancer refers to  metastatic cancer from some organ such as colon cancer.  What spreads to  the liver is clonal  and stays there only increasing in size.  If there are 1 to 3 lesions surgery  microwave ablation used.  If lesions more numerous or large &gt;5cm. chemoebolization employed with chemo directly into the hepatic artery and the vessel then occluded. Yt microspheres also used.

Needs a workup: By secondary liver cancer, I assume your father was found to have cancer in the liver which spread there from other another site. If a biopsy is done, it may indicated what kind of cancer is the primary source. Tests like CT scans may help determine where the cancer started and if it has spread to other areas. This information helps the oncologist determine what the treatment options are.

Colon cancer: Sorry about your loss.
I assume fob is fecal occult blood test.  It sounds like your mother had colon cancer.  Colon cancer, especially in the right colon, can be asymptomatic until it spreads to other organs.
Please get a colonoscopy at the very least at 50.

Depends: It very much depends on the cell type of the cancer, the size of the liver tumors, the number of liver tumors, and where the tumors are located in the liver. Sometimes surgery can be used if the tumors are not too big or too numerous, and not located in a vital area of the liver. Tumors that spread may have more aggressive cells and not respond to chemotherapy as well too.

It is a bad sign: Liver cancer can be associated with ascites. Some patients respond to treatment with sorafenib which is the recommended treatment. Once this has been done, there is very little second line treatments available. Survival then is short(less than 3 to 6 months at best).

Possibly: More important is the pathology.  We rely on pathology and the immunochemistry.  The pet may be helpful but sometimes we do not find a primary.  This is called a cancer of unknown primary.
