how can i stop a second degree burn from itching?

Part of the healing: Itching as burns heal is very common and part of the normal healing. Lots of moisturizer (cocoa butter works well) may be enough. If not, Cortisone 10 cream (or generic equivalent) can help as can oral Benadryl (diphenhydramine). Good luck!

how do i treat a partly healed second degree burn? my husband burned the back of his hands with a sedilien torch a couple weeks ago. we've been treating it with neosporin ointment. it still stings and itches him. what else can i do?

Since : Since the burns involve his hands, you should probably have a doctor look at him.  The itching can be part of normal healing, but the stinging is concerning.  In the meantime, i've listed some basic burn information below.

There are three burn classifications which will help you know what to do.

1) first degree burn: usually just redness swelling and pain. Unless it involves large areas of the hands, face, groin, feet, buttocks, or major joint, you can treat the area as a minor burn. If the burn does involve the areas listed, you should call your doctor or go to the emergency room. First degree burns may have discoloration of the skin for a few months, but do not usually lead to permanent scars.

2) second degree burn: pain, redness, swelling and blistering. As long as the burn is less than 3 inches wide and doesn't involve the body parts listed above, you can treat it as a minor burn. (it sounds as if your daughter has a small 2nd degree burn) you should call your doctor or go to the emergency room if the burn is larger than 3 inches or involves the body parts listed above.

3) third degree burn: is the most serious and the area may not hurt (from nerve damage) and can appear either black or white and dry. This needs emergent medical attention and you should call 911 or go to the emergency room.

Treatment of minor burns: 
1) cool the burn by running it under cold water for 10-15 minutes or applying cold compresses (do not use ice).

2) cover the burn loosely with a gauze

3) take an NSAID such as Ibuprofen for treatment of inflammation and pain relief.

4) do not apply butter or ointments. Do not pop any blisters.

5) keep area clean and dry. Watch for sign and symptoms of infection such as increased redness, swelling, drainage, pain or fever.

6) once the burn has healed completely, the best way to avoid scarring is to keep the area out of the sun for the next 6-12 months. Sun avoidance is the single most effective way to avoid scarring.

small second degree burn, got a blister  popped by the doctor;its been 2weeks , inside skin is red, swollen with bubbles and itches a lot. is it normal?

Depends: The new healing skin under the blister will be thin, pink & sensitive to touch. Infection would be redness and swelling in the normal skin around the blister. Itching can be normal. Without an exam i cannot tell what you mean by "bubbles." if you are concerned about infection, see your doctor very soon.

have a 1" second degree burn on arm blister popped@work now i have itching red rash and swelling 3"around. what should i do about it?

Burn: I strongly suggest that you have someone take you to the nearest Emergency facility.
I am confident they will help you control your current problem.
Won't go away overnight but it should not take more than 2 or 3 days - getting better every day.

Sometimes: It can take a year for the body to heal a second degree burn. The faster it heals the less likely a hypertrophic scar forms. If you have persistent vascular color and itching, additional scar treatment may help. Check in with your doctor to see what will help in your case.

i have a 2 week old burn and i think it is 2nd degree burn and its getting at the itching stage is it ok to swim?

Maybe?: A second degree burn would have blistering, but still have tenderness.

If the skin is intact and there is no discharge from the skin, you should be okay, especially in a well-maintained pool.

I would be cautious in open water (like a lake, ocean, or stream).

No: At the earliest, wait until your sunburns have healed, and all inflammation ; redness is gone before going back out in the sun.  Try to do better with your sunscreen.  There's no such thing as a "healthy tan".

Burns: First degree burns are like a sun burn. One of the best medicines I have recommended is aloe vera (pure), it works very well. Both first and second degree burns at the time they occur ice can help is used immediately but second degree burns often need more attention and i would recommend seeing a doctor for this . It may need to be cleaned up and treated appropriately to prevent infection.

: If you have a prior history of Psoriasis anywhere on the body and/or scalp, then a burn as it starts healing may certainly turn into Psoriasis

how can i tell if a second degree burn is healing?

Accepted Answer

Burn healing: Second degree burns are painful and wet.  The signs of healing are "buds" of new epithelium that come from deeper glands or hair follicles that were not damaged from the burn.  These appear like red islands that coalesce with time.  Full thickness burns damage these deeper structures and thus will not show signs of healing and require skin grafting to replace the damaged skin.
