i'm being treated for a  4"x12" 2nd degree burn on my stomach +7 days now.   will going back to my active job inhibit the healing process?

No: Bioclusive membrane is excellent for this. Water is good for it. Aquaphor or vaseline are good for it. Avoid peroxide or any other antiseptics. Avoid Bacitracin, Neosporin, and triple antibiotic as they are useless and common sensitizers.

Accepted Answer

Burn healing: Second degree burns are painful and wet.  The signs of healing are "buds" of new epithelium that come from deeper glands or hair follicles that were not damaged from the burn.  These appear like red islands that coalesce with time.  Full thickness burns damage these deeper structures and thus will not show signs of healing and require skin grafting to replace the damaged skin.

Increasing redness: If the area should be increasing in redness, pain, swelling, drainage or if there are red streaks ems acting from the area, i would advise contacting a physician.

Expect full healing: A second degree burn preserves the deeper dermal layer containing hair follicles and sweat glands with epidermal cells intact that can multiply and reproduce a full epidermal surface. As long as you take proper care to keep a moist, infection free environment to speed healing within 7-14 days, you should heal fully without scarring or permanent pigment changes. Ask a physician for wound care recs.

Depends in deprh: Superficial (1st degree) burns with redness require minimal treatment with an ointment & possible nsaids (if not sensitive). Partial thickness burns (2nd & 3rd degree) with blisters must be treated with topical antibiotics (bacitracin for face - silvadene (silver sulfadiazine) for body) if not allergic in order to minimize the risk of infection which may increase the amount of tissue damage. Sulfamylon for ear eschars.

Resufaced: When the skin loss has resurfaced, threat of infection is reduced.

Not much: Partial thickness burns can be exposed to air as part of healing if appropriate size and location.  Don't forget the tetanus booster.

: If you have a prior history of Psoriasis anywhere on the body and/or scalp, then a burn as it starts healing may certainly turn into Psoriasis

Accepted Answer

Part of the healing: Itching as burns heal is very common and part of the normal healing. Lots of moisturizer (cocoa butter works well) may be enough. If not, Cortisone 10 cream (or generic equivalent) can help as can oral Benadryl (diphenhydramine). Good luck!

Needs an evaluation: Increasing pain, fever, redness around the burn that wasn't there previously, and a change in the feel of the tissue are all signs of burn wound infection.  If you think you might have this, you need prompt medical attention.
