Depends: Unfortunately there are many potential causes of sharp back pain, including degenerative disc, herniated disc, facet arthropathy, muscle sprain/strain, soft tissue inflammation, etc.  The good news is that the vast majority of back pain is self limited, meaning that with time it will resolve.  Try advil or aleve (naproxen) if needed, and see a physician if pain persists.

Get evaluated by a psychiatrist who can work with you on finding the best medication.  Also, therapy can be quite helpful so consider that as well as meds.  Often a combination of both works best.
