Yes: If they had to cut a hole through an existing crown in order to perform a root canal treatment on the tooth, then yes, you could have the crown repaired with a filling presuming that the rest of the crown is in good condition. If the rest of the crown is no longer in good condition, then the entire crown should be replaced.

Weird?: You’re 36 years old and never had a filling? Either you are very lucky individual and keep your teeth really clean or have been neglecting your teeth for a long time.  Hopefully it's the first scenario.  This experience is different for everyone.  I can't say how it will be for you.  Personally, i wouldn’t call it weird.  Actually, i would call modern dentistry amazing.

It's repaired: The decay or broken part of the tooth is replaced with a filling material.  Then you feel better and it's time to pay the bill.

Accepted Answer

Depends..: Did your dentist find the cavity in a very early stage? Then probably not.

If it is deep then it could be sensitive or painful.

Dentists are well trained in pain control- use of anesthetic so you will be comfortable.

Also, people feel things differently, I have some patients that want / need anesthetic for teeth cleaning and others who have crowns made without any anesthetic and feel nothing!

The tooth is: Evaluated, the area anesthetized, the decay removed from the tooth with a dental drill and then a restorative material placed (amalgam or composite). The bite is then adjusted so that the filled tooth feels the same as all the other teeth. Hope this helps.

Both: The extent of the problem in each will determine which one is more important to do. Your own dentist can answer that question better than we can never having seen either tooth nor x-rays of them. If money is an issue consider at least having the crown removed to evaluate the tooth, and then temporized with a good fitting strong temporary crown.

Serious stuff!: It will continue to decay, leaving less and less tooth structure available to repair or salvage it. You will likely need root canal therapy and\or a crown if you wait too long or if there is already extensive caries present.  Even worse would be the need to have the tooth extracted if it is un-repairable. Eventually it will cause an infection that can spread to other parts of your body.

Sure: Swimming is fine. Have fun. Know that if you are numb, you may be thinking your mouth / lips are closed when they are not. This = taking on water, so, be careful.
