Accepted Answer

No unless you are: Immunocompromised. Washing the hand after treating the hair and touching/ hugging some one cleanse the hand and skin. If there is open wound then there is different story.

Yes: After a fungal infection of the scalp has been successfully treated the hair should definitely regrow unless another issue was involved.

Treat the infection: One's primary care doctor can check for medical causes. If none are found, then one can see a dermatologist, especially one specializing in hair restoration (some treatments: minoxidil, etc, ...). Medical causes may include: hormonal problems (low thyroid), seborrhea, alopecia areata, stressful illness. Other causes: genetic male/female pattern baldness, telogen effluvium.

Hair loss: fungal infection, stress, auto immune issue, thyroid issue, psoriasis are all possibilities.  Never heard of an ovarian cyst as cause.  Go see a doctor to take a look.

First: talk To your doctor about other causes. To my knowledge hair loss would be a rare side effect only with antidepressants and antipsychotics. Please explore a more common cause first which will dictate a different approach to treatment.

Dermatologist: A dermatologist is best qualified to evaluate,advise and treat you. You may have seborrheic dermatitis affecting your scalp and hair quality. After a diagnosis and treatment, work with a skilled beautician who can instruct you on proper hair care and continue with her program and follow-up.

See below: One does not need culture to detect fungus on a hair sample. It can be detected by UV light examination of hair. Hair is usually not cultured, but if it were it does not take more than a week for the results. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex.

Could try treating: You could perform "an empiric trial", that is try to treat with antifungal cream, locally, the areas in question, and see if the hair returns. It won't be immediate, you should be patient after treatment and wait possibly a month or more. It is more likely to be fungus if the lost areas are coin-sized or splotchy.  If you have lost all of your beard here and there could be some hormonal issue.

A Sticky Problem: This is an interesting problem. If you can, see a dermatologist and hopefully get hair and scalp samples to confirm or eliminate what you are worried about. There's a host of things that can cause or mimic fungal hair problems. [See:  Int J Trichology. 2011 Jan-Jun; 3(1): 46–56. --just Google it]. Like Canker Sores, there's a million proposed home cures for it,from a Listerine wash to Tea Tree oil
