is abuterol safe to give with this type of mucinex medicine? will breathing treatments be beneficial at this point? treating my daughter with mucinex- cough, cold & sore throat medicine since yesterday (2/17/12). her cough was tight and is now breaking-up

Number : Number one question one must ask is what is your daughter`s diagnosis. If she has asthma she needs to be on maintenance medication instead of just albuterol ( albuterol is considered a rescue medication in inhaler or nebulizer form and is not a substitute for controller medication). Mucinex (guaifenesin) may or may not help depending on underlying reasons for her cough, exacerbating/aggravating factors for her cough and underlying diagnosis.

Soothe: For significant sore throat with swollen tonsils / lymph nodes –  see physician & get a strep throat test/ culture. If you have strep throat, antibiotic therapy is imperative to prevent future complications. Consider tylenol (acetaminophen) or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Saltwater gargles: mix 1 tsp salt in 8 oz warm water – gargle several times a day. Or gargle with aloe vera juice twice a day.

Sleep helps: Most colds and sore throats are caused by viruses and your body will fight it off. Get a good nights sleep as that will impact your immune system immediately if you dont get a good nights sleep. Some infections need antibiotics so check with your doctor is it gets worse or doesnt improve in a few days.

It is often best to: Allow the body to rest when ill. If you elect to workout would keep it very light.

In that meeting, your doctor will listen to you, perform a throrough examination and possibly order labs or other tests. Based on this information, he/she will be able to tell you what's wrong and what to do about it.

Get vitamin C: Plenty of fluids, lozenges for sorethroat & if congested get a guaifenesin/pseudoephedrine pill in the morning.

Cold sore: The cold sore may have erupted because your immune system was weakened by the presence of a pharngitis or tonsillitis. Rapid strep throat culture, cbc and differential count and a monotest are indicated for further evaluation. Applying acyclovir ointment would treat the cold sore. Discuss this with your physician.

i'm seeing my pa for a lab follow up. but now i have what i think is a cold.  ( sore throat...) do i bring it up? i'm sure it will go away on its own.

Yes bring  it up: There  is no harm in mentioning it during your office visit. You are probably right that it is a cold and will go away, but while you are there, have it looked at.

See allergist/immuno: It appears that you may have an immune problem and recommend that you consult an allergist/immunologist. One of the conditions to be ruled out would be cyclic neutropenia in which your WBC gets very low periodically but impairment in the immune system can cause the same problem as well.

why does the left side of my tongue hurt whenever i get a cold/sore throat? also my uvula is hanging down and laying on my tongue. why?

Cold: Mucous causes the swollen throat and uvula. Tongue irritation can be due to a sore or due to teeth/chewing.  This can happen when you are ill. Please get  checked of worsens.
