is it safe to skip one day of fluoxetine? i take 20mg each morning but experience diarrhea every night right after dinner (regardless of the time i eat dinner or food that i eat).  can skipping a day avoid the diarrhea that day?

Accepted Answer

Yes and No: Fluoxetine has a relatively long half-life.  Missing a dose will not harm you.  However, it may not reduce your likelihood of avoiding diarrhea.  Your best option is to discuss your symptom or side effect with your prescribing provider.  You may need to switch to a different class of antidepressant because medications in the SSRI class are known to have GI side effects. Best wishes.

i use a lot of garlic salt on my food every day and get diarrhea about 1-2 times per month. could garlic be causing it? would onion powder be safer?

Maybe: It sounds more like you have irritable bowel syndrome and that is often set off by nerves, life problems, lack of sleep and stress.  It would not hurt to stop the garlic salt for a month and see if it disappears.  See your doctor to discuss this in more detail.

Several help: I recomend a variety of foods to help slow digestion/diarrhea: apples as sauce or preferably whole, pasta, bananas, some cheese and potatoes, steamed rice. Avoid apple juice, or other fruit juices, milk and fruit.

Low fiber, bland: Generally starchy foods are better absorbed and provide some relief.  Rice is an excellent example.  Foods to be avoided are salads, high fiber foods, sweet fruits, artifical sweeteners, heavy fatty meals and diabetic sugars.

Bread, rice: Whole wheat and whole grain bread, rice, bananas and fluids for hydration are good for diarrhea. The bananas are high in fiber and will absorb some of the diarrhea to give a formed stool.

Depends on: If this diarrhea is new or chronic. If chronic you need to determine why you are having diarrhea. If it just started avoid foods that are high in fats and proteins as they tend to be more difficult to digest, which is why the BRAT(bananas rice apples sauce toast) is often recommended. This diet can be short of many nutrients so don't use it long term and make sure you are getting salt replacement

Bad pain & diarrhea: If you haven't had much to eat for several days, & you have what sounds like severe pain when you eat you should really be evaluated by a physician without delay. At the very least you are at risk of dehydration. Six days of persistent symptoms is worrisome for significant infection, inflammation, ischemia of the gut or even a disease state elsewhere in the abdomen. Don't try to sit this one out!

Avoidance: It is not what you should eat to relieve it but rather what you should not that causes the abdominal cramps and diarrhea. It can he sensitivity to certain food/food allergy. Go to a GI specialist or even an allergist to find out those food causing it and avoid them. They can also diagnose if anything is more severe than food allergy.

GASTROENTERITIS: Acute onset of symptoms is most consistent with gastroenteritis.  You need to rest , fast for 8-12 hrs then clear liquids as tolerated.  CIPRO (ciprofloxacin) may be given empirically &gt;You need full exam and lab screen to rule out infection. If symptoms persist abdominal US or CT to rule out appendicitis. If it is viral it will resolve in 24-72 hrs. If fever or pain worsens seek ER eval.

you can't eat fried food when you're having diarrhea, but i forgot about that and ate a plate of fried rice just now. so what do i do?

Accepted Answer

You don't: mention the cause(if known) of your diarrhea, but you are right, fried foods can make diarrhea worse, or cause diarrhea in certain people, in part because fried foods have a high fat content and are difficult to digest.  However, if you inadvertently consumed some, there is little to do about it after the fact.  It won't have any lasting effect, and hopefully will have no effect.
