Your Orthopod will -: Decide when you change from la to a sa cast. This will allow you to start moving the stiff elbow joint.
Do regular elbow motion exercises to increase the range of motion (rom). Initially it might be uncomfortable, but persevere with it and that will improve as will the rom. One migh tneed some nsaids for the discomfort.

Weak &amp; stiff &amp; thin: Cast immobilization is great if needed, but will likely lead to transient joint stiffness of any joint immobilized by the cast-- your elbow. The muscles of the arm are not be used as much, so they will have atrophied a bit (become thinner) and be weaker. Both the weakness and atrophy will resolve with a return to normal use.

On your back: Best to sleep on your back with your arm to your side with fingers pointed toward the ceiling.  Wrap the cast with a pillow or blanket.  This will help it stand independently at your side, and will protect your teeth if you swing your arm during your sleep.  People do weird things during their sleep, so the pillow wrap is really an important safety measure.
