Temp filling: Yes if your temporary filling fell out you risk contaminating your tooth. So either return to the dentist to get it replaced or go the drug store and buy dental temorary filling material and pace it in your tooth and use a wet cotten tip to remove the excess.

YES!: It is important to keep bacteria out of the access hole and a temporary restoration will help. Also, it is important to have a permanent restoration to prevent bacteria from seeping into the tooth and causing further decay of the remaining tooth structure. This should be done within a month or two after having the root canal completed.

Temp Filling: We get these calls all the time. The temporary is a clay like material and the outer part tends to wear away or break off a bit... usually without consequence. Unless you have a really bad taste in your mouth from the medication or if a  sharp edge of the tooth is cutting you, you should be fine until your next visit.

Get it fixed!: Root canal treatment must be followed up with a definitive restoration of the tooth.  A leak into the root canal filling could cause a failure of the root canal treatment.  Also, teeth that have had root canal treatment are more likely to break and must have a strong final restoration placed to help prevent this.

Possible fracture: That fact that a temp filling  fell out may suggest that there is a fracture in the tooth.  A devitalized  tooth is more brittle than a vital tooth and more prone to fracture.  
Of course, the temp filling may be unrelated to the pain.  You've just undergone a surgical procedure and there will always be a healing phase for 3-5 days post-operatively.  Consult your dentist pronto!

Make sure you have an appointment asap with your dentist to build up the tooth or place a post and possibly construct a crown (cap) or onlay for the tooth.

Get evaluated by doc: It's possible that the root canal has become reinfected especially if the temporary filling has come out completely and the gutta percha, the root canal filling material has come in contact with fluids from your mouth.  It has been documented that bacteria in you mouth can migrate down along the side the filling in the canal and start a new infection.  You need to see a dentist asap to have exam.
