will you get ringworm from swimming?

Not likely: Ringworm or tinea is caused by a fungus known as a dermatophyte. It lives on human and animal skin. It prefers moist areas of skin, but can grow anywhere on the body. It can be acquired by direct contact with infected skin of animals or humans. The dermatophyte does not live in water so it is unlikely that you would get it from swimming.

Accepted Answer

Yes: I assume you are using a topical antifungal for the ringworm (a fungal infection of the skin and not actually a worm despite the name).  If you are using a topical treatment and are swimming right after you normally apply the medication, wait until after swimming and then apply to avoid it being washed off before it has penetrated the skin.  If it is a pill, swimming will have no effect.

Doctor can evaluate: Ringworm on the skin is a fungal infection of the surface of the skin, called a Tinea corporis infection. It generally does not get pus inside it. A pus-forming infection more often has bacteria as the cause. Thus, a doctor should look at the skin problem and offer a diagnosis and treatment.

Yes: You are unlikely to contaminate the pool or transmit the infection to anybody else.

You should: have your fungal infection TREATED  BEFORE you use a common pool!  People REACT to seeing ANY skin problem in other swimmers. You CAN go swimming in a chlorine trteated pool but you SHOULDN'T  (In my opinion!!!)

my son has ringworm on his scalp. he has been taking terbinafine for 9 days. can he go swimming in our salt water pool?

Ok: swimming is ok but he should continue his medication and follow up by his doctor.

i am currently taking doxycycline and just started a 10 day course of terbinafine for resistant ringworm. i am on vacation next week at the lake and planned on swimming. both of these meds say avoid sunlight. does this mean i should not swim?

Accepted Answer

: Both drugs can cause photosensitivity, i.e. increased sunburn with sun exposure. A strong sunblock (preferably SPF 30 or higher) usually prevents it. But still take it easy -- cover up as much as practical if sun exposure can't be entirely avoided.

so ive recently been diagnosed with ring worm on my leg. ive started cream treatment, theres no skin flakes or openings in the area at all. is it okay to go swimming? or should wait till its completely gone?

: Should be OK as long as you continue the topical treatment as prescribed.
