LUQ anatomy: Anatomically, the left upper quadrant (luq) of abdomen includes: spleen, pancreatic tail, stomach, descending duodenum, splenic flexure of the colon, associated vessels. Don't forget the diaphragm, heart, and lower chest are pretty close by. The abdominal musculature, ribs, and skin can all contribute as well to localizing luq symptoms as described.

Doctor can examine: Many things are in the upper abdomen:  stomach, pancreas, liver, small intestine, gall bladder, large intestine, abdominal muscles, etc...  An exam by a primary care doctor can be helpful. The stomach itself and the spleen are in the left upper abdomen. Discomfort in the right upper abdomen, plus symptoms that occur after meals, may be due to liver, gall bladder, or gallstone disease.

Abdominal distention: when was the last time you had a bowel movement? If you are having fevers with worsening distention and pain to the right side with nausea and vomiting go to the ER now. If not and you are constipated you will need to see a local provider also to be cleaned out and to make sure nothing else is wrong.

GoWatchASadMovie: Do you watch a lot of comedies on Netflix? Sometimes, a muscle can get strained after a hard laugh,but that should go away with time (unless you're on a laughing gas binge). It may also be a hernia.They can pop-up in places not familiar to most people.And you may not necessarily feel a lump or bulge,so probably a good idea to get it checked by a doctor  because in most cases a hernia won't go away

Rib injury: Hard hugs can bruise or fracture ribs. If you're having severe pain and rib cage tenderness, I recommend rib xrays so you'll know how long healing may take. There is no specific treatment for either injury but duration is weeks for rib fractures. Hold onto your ribs when you have to cough or take a deep breath. We no longer strap rib cages when injured as pneumonia is a possible complication.

Causes may be mechanical (obstruction, or the stomach outlet narrowed from healing of past inflammation, treated by endoscopic dilation), post-inflammatory (due to swelling of the stomach lining from ulcers, treated with acid blockers), or neurologic (as with diabetes, treated with rx that stimulates motility--domperidone, erythromycin, reglan, (metoclopramide) zelnorm)

Hernias need to be repaired surgically. Please have an evaluation by your medical doctor to determine what is going on and best course of treatment.
