Possible: Yes, it is possible to fracture a rib from coughing although I have more common,y seen it in older and frail people.

Probably you are ---: Re-injuring it again ; again. It happens all the time, but normally your brain doesn't register it, but when there is a tender spot, even a slightest touch to it, even unintentionally, will make it hurt.
Just be extra careful. 
Pain meds, hot pad, support tape, muscle relaxers ; gentle exercises to strengthen the muscles, us, stretching exercises, will all be helpful.
See pcp, if no better.

See below: Rib fracture is a possibility. Also likely is a musculoskeletal problem--  acute muscle strain, pulled muscle. This can cause a fair amount of pain. Your personal physician can rule out rib fracture. Possible x-ray

i've got a pain in my right bottom ribs from what i assume was throwing up quite violently on the weekend.  it hurts to breath and move and laugh, cough etc. i think this is a muscle injury. how long until i'm back to normal. i hate being away from the gy

Intercostal strain: Most likely this is an intercostal muscle strain. A strain of the costochondral cartilage would be another possibility. Rest is the primary treatment for either one of these. I would recommend that you be pain-free with everyday activities for around 5 days before strenuous exercise. However, cardio training such as stationary biking and some medium-intensity walking may be tolerated now.

Possibly: A traumatic event that causes a rib injury could cause a muscular rent, which is , by definition, a hernia. A bulge on the side of a rib injury could also be due to some muscle laxity, which could be contributed to some degree of denervation associated with trauma. This can also be caused by herpetic infection (shingles.) a good physical exam can define a hernia. Good luck.
