what's the difference between retinol and vitamin a in skin cream, if any?

Retinol more active: Retinol is an animal form of vitamin a.  Vitamin 
a comes in 2 sources: animal and plant. The animal source is called retinoids which include retinol. The plant source is called carotenoids which includes beta-carotene. The body converts beta-carotene to vitamin a. Retinol is the more active form of vitamin a that is better absorbed thru the skin.

Wrong question: Use of retinol is independent of vitamin or sunscreen use. It may be useful for acne or for brown areas. Answer to this question depends on the reason for use.

how do i stop my eyebrow hair loss? it was caused by using retinol cream which i stopped immediately after. only my eyebrows have been falling for four months now. is this telogen effluvium? am i deficient in any vitamins? any thyroid or iron issues?

Likely an irritant reaction only,possibly Retin A related.
Be very gentle with your eyebrows now  and hopefully they will regrow normally over the next 6 months

Reddening, stinging: Retinol is the fat soluble form of vitamin a found in anti-wrinkle skin creams. It attracts moisture, which increases water content of skin. It increases production of collagen and promotes cell division to reduces fine wrinkling,  also helps pigmentation effects of too much sun.  

Side effects may include reddening of the skin and a mild stinging sensation, scaling and increased sun sensitivity.

Vitamin A ointment: Vitamin a ointment is only indicated for vitamin a deficiency issues or conjunctival keratinization.  It is not for dry eye treatment outside of these issues.  When it is indicated, i order it from leiter's pharmacy in california.

Should be fine: I know of no complications from long term use of tretinoin cream.  There isn't significant absorption through the skin so it is doubtful that it will decrease you daily intake needs for vitamin a.

: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, it would have helped had you provide the actual result. High is not helpful. High could be just above the normal limit and would not be meaningful.    Wish you good health!

It doesn't: Because this is not the case, may be with some anecdotal cases, but not the norm or a common effect or side effect, the drug works on the sebaceous glands not the hair follicles.
