No: Hi, Robin.  Since retinal folds are associated with significant ocular, orbital and systemic pathology, I would tell the boxer to have a complete physical exam with blood work for inflammatory disease and orbital/cerebral imaging. If he goes on to fight without further workup and bleeds into his head from trauma to a brain tumor, there are going to be many unhappy players  Best wishes! Gary

Retinal specialist: Retinal folds sometimes occur spontaneously and do not lead to vision changes. Other times they can be from traction within the eye or sometimes from external pressure outside of the eye. An examination either by a retinal specialist or ophthalmologist can give your expected prognosis and treatment options.

Visual changes: When the retina tears (usually leading to retinal detachment) you will experience light flashes and streaks even with the eyes shut, large quantities of floaters, a pattern of veins like the veins on a leaf in your view and a greying out of the vision. As it advances the vision drop it is not painful so that is not a clue.  If you have any or all of these, you need to see an ophthalmologist pronto.

Retinal traction: Most retinal rears are caused by traction on the retina by the vitreous gel, sometimes in association with weaknesses in the retina related to high eye nearsightedness, retinal injuries, old retinal scarring, etc.  As the eye ages, the vitreous gel naturally liquifies and detatches from the retina,  a posterior retinal detachment.  Residual areas of traction can cause retinal tears/detachment.

Sensorineural tissue: The retina lines the inside of the back wall of the eye and is responsible for capturing light, just like film in a camera. The retina converts this light information into electrical signals that get transmitted along the optic nerve to the brain for interpretation as vision. Similar to brain and spinal chord tissue, the retina is not able to regenerate itself after damage or injury.

They may also note floating 'specks' in their vision caused by loose bits of the vitreous gel at the back of the eye.  Some may note a curtain over a peripheral part of the vision.  All these call for an immediate dilated eye exam by an ophthalmologist.
