my urologist prescribed 5mg valium to relax the pelvis to prevent residual urine in the bladder. since it is only working partially i am considering for 10mg dose, but is it safe for longterm? residual urine is causing harmful bacteria?

: No, Valium is not safe long term and in your case may help to some extent, but it only serves as a bridge to until a long term solution is formulated. Do not increase your Valium dose without your prescriber’s recommendation as it is a controlled substance and monthly supplies are watched closely, you may not be able to get your refill in time if your prescriber is unaware of changes you make.

OAB: You need a cystoscopy to make sure bladder and urethra lining ok. Your prostate is small so you may have over active bladder which would respond to different medications.

did a urine ultrasound the results were, significant post void residual volume of 278.1. 35 yrs, no other symptoms but tons of anxiety and hypochondria.. nervous it could be sinister.. thanks? was also told the bladder was distended out of 800ml?

: That is a significant residual postvoiding residual and a huge amount of urinary retention at your age and raises suspicion of bladder outlet obstruction or a neurogenic bladder problem. Your urologist will have to advise you about causes, treatment and, if advisable, referral to a neurologist.

: No.  This is an external ultrasound placed over your bladder after voiding (just above pubic bone)

Varies; 400-600mL.: There is, of course, a wide range. You can say that the average male bladder capacity is around 400-600ml, or 13-20 fluid ounces. This would be the volume voided after holding urine to the point of severe urgency. If the patient is under anesthesia and the bladder distended with water, the bladder can usually hold even more, around 1000ml or 33 fl. Oz.

Bladders: Yes. Of course. But the urge to pee is as much a habit as the urge to pee increasing as he bladder stretches. There will be a point when you cannot hold it any longer.

Urge incontinence: It sounds like bladder incontinence symptoms. This can be caused when the bladder is "overactive" or "irritable" and wants to empty as soon as any urine collects. Failure to empty, due to bladder obstruction or bladder muscular weakness are possible causes. It is also possible that you are able to empty your bladder, but bladder irritability gives you the sensation that voiding is incomplete. Figuring this out requires a detailed history and exam.

Bladder function: Diuretics increase urine production but have nothing to do with bladder function.  If you are having difficulty voiding, see a urologist for proper evaluation of your bladder function.

May not rupture: Bladders are stretchable to a point. 3L-4L would be maximal and even before that the pressure would typically overcome the sphincter pressure and cause a leak via the urethra.  Bladder rupture could occur however and would generally be dependent on age, how rapidly the bladder filled.  How long this would take is quite variable and would depend on how much one drank. Don’t try to find out! Danger!
