Anticoagulation can help to prevent worsening of the problem.

It is dangerous to have strenuous exercise because it can cause a piece of clot to break off that can then travel to the lungs causing a Pulmonary embolism, to the brain causing a stroke, or to the heart causing arrhythmia. It is vital that a person with a DVT not do any strenuous exercise until cleared to do so by their DR.

Avoid risk factors: Avoid sitting or not moving for long time, walking is good , take medicine like Heparin sq , Lovenox (enoxaparin) sq , Fragmin .. All these are effective .. Lovenox (enoxaparin) showed a little bit better protection especially in cancer patients.

Either can be true.: Dvt more commonly occurs in patients who have some risk factors, such as trauma, history in the family (possible predisposing that person to dvt- for example hereditary thrombophilia) or immobilization, due to obesity, inactivity or injury (casts, bedrest, illness, dehydration and others).  It is less likely, but not impossible, to occur in minutes.
