Pigment loss: When the skin pigment is lost from your skin surface and the area turns white, it is called vitiligo. The causes can be many and it may also be a hint that you may have an autoimmune disease(thyroid etc). However most vitiligo cases are mainly cosmetic.

No great way: (1) exposed area, cosmetic such as Dermabase. 
(2) try to ascertain if there is an autoimmune process going on especially with the thyroid.
(3)Consider a trial with UVB-NB phototherapy. 
(4)Learn to leave with it.

No: Diet isn't the key to managing viiligo. Your dermatologist may have something to offer, though treatment isn't spectacularly effective. Different people feel differently about having vitiligo. From reading the internet, one might get the idea that food choice is the key to managing most diseases, even the non-lifestyle-related ones; mostly this is just imagination run wild. Good luck.

Get seen: A Dermatologist or Immunologist with experience can help.  Often topical steroids, tacrolimus or phototherapy are initial measures.  Good luck!

No.: Vitiligo is an autoimmune process in which the  pigment cells (melanocytes) are killed.  Once this happens you see the vitiligo, but these cells cannot be resurrected.

Vitiligo is not harmful per se, but the skin can, of course, be easily sunburned. Vitiligo can also cluster with other autoimmune diseases that can be very dangerous or worse, if not treated (e.g., type 1 diabetes, Addison's disease, others).
