First you need to : find out what's going on. Scalp inflammation can be just a form of dandruff(but isn't normally related to hair loss). Then you need to determine causes of your hair loss (?thyroid and anemia or iron deficiency/ferritin are common, vs stress induced alopecia). So I would make an appointment with dermatologist soon

i was prescribed purbac double strength - i've since finished the course but the inflammation and pustules on my scalp have returned. is this normal?

Folliculitis?: Purbac is sufamethoxazole-trimethoprim, which often works with folliculitis and similar skin infections, but not always. Ask your doctor about other antibiotics, such as cephalexin (Keflex), Augmentin, azithromycin, and doxycycline.

localized mildly itchy area on very top of scalp for past week. no redness, no inflammation, no flaking. what could it be? no changes in hair care.

Sounds treatable: Try otc use of selsun blue.  Sometimes we have minimal-symptom fungal infections of the scalp that can present like this.  If this does the trick, keep using it for another week beyond resolvement, and for any flare-ups.  If it doesn't work, call your doctor for an appointment for further evaluation.

i was prescribed 15mg of prednisone for my scalp and skin inflammation/irritation for two weeks. how long until i feel relief and is this a high dose?

Not a high dose but.: You do not describe the type of inflammation/irritation you are experiencing, but generic xantac (ranitidine) 150mg two times a day and Claritin (loratadine) 10mg will give you better relief if itching is an issue!

Herpes Type1?: Sounds like this could be herpes and you should see your primary care physician in the morning. He/she may put you on anti-virals. If it is zoster your immune system might be compromised.

See a dermatologist: A skin specialist will help you. An exam will lead to a diagnosis. A diagnosis will point to a remedy.

Yes: Any inflammation, infection...bacterial/fungus, vitamin and protein deficiency, hormonal changes cause hair loss. Chemicals...impurities in hair products also do it.

Define "inflamed".: If you mean that there is an active infection in your scalp, i would seek treatment from your doctor or a dermatologist first. If you mean inflammation due to psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis, that's what polytar (coal tar) is for.

Hopefully: Hopefully just seborrheic dermatitis or contact dermatitis. Please see your dermatologist for evaluation and to discuss treatment options.

i have extremely itchy, inflammed and crusty scalp which has moved to my forehead, ears and neck my dr prescribed nizerol but it's not working help!

Seborrhea: It could be seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis.  Your dr. Have you a rx that is an antifungal which may help in cases of seborrhea.  You should visit a dermatologist who may feel more comfortable and has experience diagnosing and treating skin problems.
