Possibly iritis: You may have inflammation in the anterior chamber of the eye (iritis) and should see an ophthalmologist to be evaluated.  Other signs would be brow ache and light sensitivity.

Inflamation: Typically redness on the conjunctiva (white area) around the outside if the iris (limbus) is due to inflammation.  Dilation of the blood vessels  causes the red appearance.  The underlying cause needs to be identified.  I wild recommend you get an eye exam

Problem inside eye: The headache might be secondary to an inflammation inside the eye termed uveitis which can cause the red ring you have noticed.  If the vision is down and the eye is light sensitive you should see an ophthalmologist as soon as possible to rule out this potentially vision threatening condition.

i slept in my contacts and now i'm seeing a red ring around my iris, what should i do about this? is it an early sign of an eye infection?

Probably not: No. It is most likely due to the lens tightening during the night, compressing the tissue and blood vessels around the eye. There is probably some edema of your cornea, which you would notice as your vision will not be clear. Leave your lenses out for a day or two and then start wearing them part of the day and build up to all day. Don't sleep in them again!

Possible Iritis: It is difficult to be certain without actually being able to examine your eye with a slit lamp, but what you are describing sounds like it might be iritis, which is inflammation of the iris and the adjacent structures.  This usually causes pain, light sensitivity and sometimes blurred vision.  I would contact your eye doctor again to see if you can get in sooner for evaluation and treatment.

Take it out: Take it out and don't wear the contact again until the redness fades and you don't have symptoms.

See an opthamologist: For a definitive diagnosis you should see an opthamologist. The differential diagnosis of an irritated eye is large and encompasses everything from foreign bodies to allergies to infections to autoimmune processes. The finding of a visibile change around the iris also warrants evaluation by someone in person.

Eye exam: Never delay eye examination and treatment if you have had a herpes breakout of any kind. You must be evaluated and examined by a health care eye professional.

Iris abnormalities: Unfortunately this is a question that requires a recommendation to have a slit lamp examination of the front of the eye. Possibilities include but are not limited to iris blood vessels, pathological iris blood vessels, iris rumors, iris moles,  blood, foreign body.  Seek ophthalmological advice.
