Many possibilities: A simple red eye can be literally hundreds of things.  But in general if it is only red with no other symptoms like pain, itching, irritation, tearing, discharge, blurred vision it is unlikely to be anything to worry about.  Watch for other symptoms and if they occur you should see an eye doc.

Common not natural : There are many causes of red eyes on awakening: -lack of sleep .. Dry eyes...Allergies...Contact lens problems...Infection...If it recurs orcthere is any pain or blurry vision or change in vision you should see your dr right away.

Bacterial conjunctiv: You definitely have an eye infection. If the discharge is white,it is Allergic Conjunctivitis and if it is yellow,Bacterial Conjunctivitis. 
Treatment for Allergic Conjunctivitis : Spersallerg Eye Drops , 2 drops 3 times daily. 
Bacterial Conjunctivitis treatment :
Tobradex Eye Drops or ointment (needs a prescription)

Besides dust, other possibilities include dust mites, feathers (in your pillow), mold (in your carpet), etc.  You can see your primary care physician to get tested (immunocap = very reliable blood test) and treated; prescriptions or over the counter meds may help you, including oral antihistamines, topical treatments (eye drops, nasal sprays).

i have had very itchy red eyes and swollen eyelids from monday. there is no discharge during the day but in the morning i wake up with crusty discharge. when this started i had an itchy throat and ears and that still happens now and again.

Itchy eyes: I would need to see your eye in order to come to a conclusion for you personally. Eye conditions such as this are often incorrectly treated with antibiotics. Most of the time this is from a viral condition or allergy. Allergy eye drops are usually helpful. See an eye doctor
