Healing: Any injury to the scalp will eventually try to heal. Dried blood, mixed with died cells form a layer on the wound surface known as scab. Beneath it a new skin is formed and the scab will eventually fall off the normal skin. It works as a shied, basically.

Not as only symptom: Scabs alone, without prior blisters, sores, etc, almost certainly are not due to herpes of any type. Of the 3 main herpes infections, herpes zoster (shingles) would be the most likely and would start with painful lesions then scabs, on only one side of the scalp. Herpes simplex virus types 1 or 2, the causes of oral and most genital herpes respectively, would almost never involve the scalp.

Wait it out.: I would not attempt to remove it until it falls off naturally, as you may impede the healing process.  You can attempt to moisturize the skin over the scab, it will improve the healing and possible accelerate the process at which it falls off.  Picking at it or removing it will make it more likely to scar.

Yes: A recurring "scab" can be caused y many different skin  diseases . I  could even be caused by a skin cancer that can get bigger You should have it looked at by a doctor.

Dermatologist: These may be from psoriasis of the scalp. If so, a proper regimen in treating these lesions is important. Nevertheless It's important to establish an accurate diagnosis. I recommend that you be evaluated and treated by a dermatologist.

Scalp lesion. : If you've had a lesion in your scalp for that long, and it's bleeding, whether you're picking at it or not, you NEED to have it evaluates by a Dermatologist. The scalp is a sun-exposed area.

Bug bites? Eczema?: Are these itchy?  What is there before the scab?  Neutragena makes a coal tar based shampoo that is very effective and can be used as needed.

Go see your doctor: You may need to see a derm doctor if your primary care doctor can't help you figure out what the lesion is.   He may be able to biopsy it in the office.  If not, he could refer you to a derm who could give him an opinion.

See a Dermatologist: It's been chronic and we need to find the etiology. Guess work may not be helpful. Please see a dermatologist.

DO NOT PICK: Use an antibacterial SHAMPOO  HOWEVER the REASONS for the Scabs is important as well!!!!!!
Head lice, Psoriasis, Seborrhea are some of the reasons which may be causing the scabs!!!!
See a DERMATOLOGIST and FIND OUT!!
