Gingivitis: Acute inflammation of the gums can be caused by Herpes virus and bacteria. An unusual infection called acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG) can be very troublesome and is caused by the Herpes virus and can be complicated by bacterial superinfection. It can be treated by acyclovir and vancyclovir. See your healthcare provider ASAP.

Normal: Yes this is common. You might want to rinse your mouth with warm salt water to help reduce the bacteria is your mouth and it can also help promote healing of the canker sores.  It will definitely sting, but it helps stimulate healing.

: A tender, raised gingival lesion with surrounding erythematous mucosa can be a tooth abscess whereas cancer sore is present as an ulcer like a crater. The pain of acute tooth abscess will be exacerbated with trying to move the tooth but pain from cancer sore is separated from the tooth, only worse when eating. Cancer sore is often on the cheek or tongue, not on the gum.
