See below: 1. Make sure to drink lots of water daily to ensure proper hydration in colon.
2. Exercise (not necessarily vigorously) daily to help with motion of colon.
3. May try magnesium citrate liquid, polyethylene glycol liquid (e.g. Miralax), and dulcolax suppository.
4. Reduce stress in life - it strongly affects GI system.

By prevention: Keeping yourself regular is the best method of preventing impaction.  Plenty of fiber is the first line of therapy, and pioneers ate much more fiber than we do now.  Make sure you drink plenty of water as well.

As to treating it once it happened, either a manual disimpaction or an enema is the best method of clearing it.

Probably not: You would only be able to pass liquid if there was an impaction. You should try to eat more fruit fiber.

Rectal impaction =: Chronic constipation causes hard/dry stool to accumulate in the rectum where it becomes stuck.

Should get seen: Constipation severe enough to cause impaction is not normal.  It is worthwhile being evaluated.  General advice for people with constipation:  drink plenty of water, get aerobic exercise (eg walking at a brisk pace 20-30min/day), eat a high fiber diet and add fiber supplements if necessary.  Avoid nuts, cheese, other foods that tend to constipate.

Amazing - Creskin: Crespin, is this a trick question.  Getting rid of the impaction usually requires manual extraction.  Are you up to that ?  It does not stop there, what is causing you to have impactions ?  Go to the doctor.

Dig it out: There are a variety of methods used for poor evacuation. Starting with oral meds &amp; enemas it moves on to actual manual (by hand) disimpaction. This is one of a hospital orderlies or nurses least favorable procedures. Fecal impaction is not that uncommon &amp; certainly much more common than the scary issues you mentioned. Find a GI doc &amp; get on a gut rehab plan.It is fixable with effort.

feeling: Of fullness in your rectum that you can't get out, recent absence of a normal bm, sometimes leakage of liquid from anus or only watery stools as that is all that gets around the impaction. Need to be evaluated to determine the reason for your impaction.
