Yes: Many women have a "retorverted" uterus meaning the main part of the uterus tips backward toward the pelvic bone.  This can often be felt with rectal exam.  The lower part of the uterus, the cervix, can normally be felt in most women.

Carefully: The physician will insert a gloved finger into the rectum, feeling for abnormal masses and or blood, stool should be tested immunologically for blood. Although still considered a screening evaluation that is acceptable, a colonoscopy is still the best screening tool we have for early colon/rectal cancer detection.

Do the Math: The length of the colon and rectum is about 5 feet, so a digital exam, although important, will only find tumors within a few inches of the anus. Colonoscopy remains the "gold standard" for colorectal ca screening.

Probably: If the blood was bright red and not mixed with stool, it is quite likely that you bled from the hemorrhoids. However to be sure, I recommend that a proctologist or colorectal surgeon start with a simple flexible sigmoidoscopy which visualizes the descending colon and would be good evidence in ruling out internal hemorrhoids, benign polyps, ulcerative colitis,or malignant growths.

Hemosure: Hemosure is used to test for blood on stool and is an immunlogical test with increased accuracy. You should discuss consideration of a colonoscopy with your MD to determine the reason for a positive test. Best of luck.

how is a rectal exam performed?

Routine exam: Includes a rectal. Two positions: lying on side, bending over. With women it can be done as part of pelvic lying on back using fingers in vagina and rectum.  A glove & lubricant are always used. The exam in men chcecks prostate as ewll as rectum, in women recto-vaginal septum. Stool on the glove is used to detect occult blood. A good exam should be thorough but not painful.
