Post op toe surgery: Numbness after toe surgery is not uncommon. However it should get better over time. If the big toe now touches the second, go back to your surgeon and ask him or her to splint the toes.

It differs...: Depending on the person and what procedure is done for your correction.  The good thing is that most doctors want you to get up and moving the joint right away after surgery.  There really should be little interruption in your normal activities.  Of course, this is all done within reason - ask your podiatrist for details.

Depends: It depends on the surgery.  Most commonly, the first surgery is a cheilectomy which is shaving of the spur.  This is a "clean up" procedure and there is usually no restrictions in weight bearing.  Most of my patients take about a month to get into reasonable shoes and resume most activities.

Possible nerve issue: If you have had this feeling since the surgery sometimes the nerves in the skin are irritated. If it is new it could indicate infection or scar adhesions. If the redness is spreading out from your incision you should follow up with the surgeon as you may need antibiotics. If the scar is tight and skin is immobile you can do circular massage or use scar creams.

Not usually: Hallux rigidus is osteoarthritis(oa) of the 1st metatarsophalangeal joint of the foot.  As it progresses, bone spurs form and the joint becomes very stiff.  Hence, you need oa to have hallux rigidus.  You get early oa from heredity or trauma to the joint.  Unless you have one of these, then it is very unlikely to get hallux rigidus.

Arthritis in big toe: Hallux rigidus is arthritis (loss of cartilage) in the big toe (mtp) joint.  It has a variety of causes including post traumatic, mechanical overload and idiopathic.  It is manifest by pain, stiffness, and often "fullness" about the joint. Plain x-rays are usually sufficient to confirm the diagnosis.  Orthopaedic foot and ankle specialists are optimal sources to diagnose and treat this problem.

First: Everyone perceives pain differently. Second, there are many different procedures to cure this issue. Rest assured if you have pain and this is why you are doing the surgery, you will be given pain killers for post op and ultimately your problem will be fixed.

In theory yes: Limited range of motion of the hallux can cause bio mechanical strain to other parts of the foot including the plantar fascia
