White Spots on Gums: Most times white "spots" are harmless or benign. Without the benefit of a photo or clinical exam, my first impression of your description would be normal tissue that may be similar to scar tissue because of the previous recession. . However, if you have other risk factors such as smoking and excessive alcohol you may want to follow up with your dentist. Good health!!

Can be: Initially you might be putting too much pressure on it , or your gums are very inflamed. The brush does all the work , so you must learn to put it in place and leave it-- not brush back/forth, up/down. Also, the oral B and the sonicare have built-in detectors that let you know if you are putting too much pressure on it. Oral B flashes red light, and sonicare changes speed. Be gentle. Good Luck.

It's not: No one has to use an electric toothbrush for proper oral hygiene.  A hand held toothbrush and dental floss is all that is necessary.  However, many patients do a better job with an electric toothbrush. Only for those with physical handicaps who could otherwise not brush adequately would i consider it 'essential'.

Maybe : If your gums are sensitive, start with a new soft bristled manual brush and gently brush after every meal. Floss or use an oral irrigator as well. In time your gums will firm and you can switch to an electric toothbrush if you choose.

You also have to clean between teeth daily, the places that no toothbrush can ever reach.  And you have to be seen for regular professional care.  So start with your Dentist, the professional that knows your needs best,  ask his/her advice.

Inflammation: There is a false sense of security that brushing and flossing 2x day will either prevent or cure most dental problems. When is the last time you had a professional dental cleaning and exam? If your teeth have calculus deposits, or if you have pocketing, all the brushing and flossing in the world will not make you gums healthy. Have a local dentist examine you and make recommendations for care.
