Epigenetics and drug: We know that sickle cell patients that have increased Hemoglobin F typically have less sickle cell complications. This is the basis for using Hydroxyurea in sickle cell patients. Some individuals have elevated Hemoglobin F levels due to differences in the genetic region of the beta and gamma globin genes that prevent the normal shutting-off of the gamma globin gene. This leads to increased HGB f.

i have had high rbc for 9months w/ normal-high but increasing hemoglobin&hematocrit. all levels are now high. could dehydration be the reason? i am female and drink min 40oz of water per day &follow a healthy diet with exercise. no medications.

Hematologist ...: Dehydration is probably not the answer. Rising Hemoglobin &amp; Hematocrit indicate you are probably making more Red Blood cells than Normal. The Hematologist  is who you need to resolve you questions fastest.

No not normal: You are lucky that you developed blood clot in a non essential organ.  If this were your heart or brain where blood clot formed or travelled, it could have been life-threatening or at least severe impairment would have resulted.  See a blood specialist, hematologist, for an opinion whether you should be on anticoagulation.

Need for evaluation: Just smoking should not raise the hemoglobin in a woman to near 17. You may wish to repeat it after making sure you drink enough water. However, it may be better to consult a hematologist for an evaluation.

Chemotherapy can do : If he is still taking his chemotherapy drugs they are prone to cause low hemoglobin and low counts and infections causing fever. If he is not taking chemotherapy for more than 2 months then his hemoglobin should be near normal unless his myeloma is coming back(relapsing), .Is he on maintenance with lenalidomide?

High Hb: Stop smoking. This may be a compensatory increase in red blood cells to oxygenate better your body.  Your dr. May decide to check your viscosity in blood an order tests like ultrasounds to check your kidney, liver. Worst escenario consult with a blood specialist to discuss bone marrow.Thallasemias ( hereditary abnormal hemoglobines also increase the rbcs). You can donate blood often to lower ur #.

At high levels of blood sugar, more reacts w/ the hemoglobin, causing an elevated hemoglobin a1c.
